Veal growers making the transition to group housing

“The American Veal Association says their transition to group housing is progressing ahead of schedule. Two years ago the AVA board voted to have all veal calf operations converted to group housing by the end of 2017. By this last April, more than one-third, 34.8 percent of the veal calves going to market are from group housing.

The change does present some management challenges for veal operators as they deal with “bully’ calves and less uniformity in the calves. Research continues in North America and Europe for ways to help manage calf group behavior, nutritional needs, and to refine various group housing systems to improve calf well-being.”
